Forgotten Realms Campaign [FRC]
Before the campaign gets underway a lot of preparation will be done. Countless evil schemes will be laid, most of which surely will kill your beloved characters, unless they are really careful. This part of the FRC is where player's can find practical information as well as in information relevant to the campaign.
The campaign information is divided several areas, some of it is available to all, and some is available to those PC's who have access to it. It is then up the you to share this information with the other player's, as you see fit.
The information is divided into sections
-
IRL Practicalities - all the practical nuts and bolts.
-
Geography - a quick orientation about Faerun and where the campaign will take place. More detailed maps can be found in the Download section. Maps will be uploaded as the PC's explore differenct campaign areas.
IRL Practicalities
The goal is for this campaign-group to meet once or twice per year, if feasible, and play a full weekend, straight. Hopefully, this means that sessions will be intense, captivating, and gripping, while creating contunuity for player's and GM alike.
One of the challenges with playing so rarely is, that, if not handled correctly, a large amount of time will be spent with managing, preparing, and updating characters; i.e. quality gaming time will be spent on menial stuff, which should have been dealt with beforehand. To further confound this, the player’s are scattered over a large geographical area, making it impossible to hook up for a few hours, to get all the preparation and solo-play sorted out before the Game Weekend.
This calls for a new line of attack when running this campaign. The Master Plan is below, and basically puts new technologies to use in order to facilitate an old hobby, tabletop role-playing.
The Master Plan, is straight forward, really. But just to make sure you are ready for this: clear your mind, sharpen your senses (use stimulants, if necessary), and prepare to some new thinking.
Jointly, player and GM, will create a character concept (PC, if you will), which will have several solo-sessions before the Game Weekend. This will allow player’s to have a fairly good grip of their PC once come Game Weekend. Several PC’s; if it will be all at once, or in small groups is nor clear; will have group sessions prior to the Game Weekend. This approach will make it possible to actually begin play before we meet face-to-face, hence giving us a head start, and allowing us to get right into the action. Now, this is where the new technologies come into play...
So what new technologies, you ask? Well, this website, Janus Friis, and something called phpBB are key elements to making it work. Here is briefly how it it'll work. This website will be anchor point of the campaign; where everyone can find everything they need to know. It will also be the collective memory; journal if you will, of the campaign. Skype, created by Janus Friis, will be used for long distance solo-and group sessions prior Game Weekends. This offers an opportunity to be almost face-to-face and play sessions before we meet IRL. This will allow players to develop, build up, and explore their characters before. A forum, phpBB, will be the place where players can play-by-post; getting their characters into the action, establishing connections, and build network, all to be used during Game Weekend. The forum is a different approach than via Skype, or by a face-to-face session, but suits the needs and style of the campaign, all the while it will serve as a repository of information for the individual player's and their characters.
Geography
The campaign takes place in a large geographical area of Faerun. To the north it is limited by the Great Glacier and to the south by the Sea og Falling Stars. East to west it will encompass areas as far apart as Thay and the ancient forest of Cormanthor, where the ancient ruins of Myth Drannor are located.
The overview map below shows Faerun; the orange box denotes the campaign area. Certain cities and geographical features have been highlighted to allow for easy orientation on the map.
